Paul Graham says every city tells you something. In New York, it’s Make more money. In Paris, it’s Enjoy life.[1]
I think Tokyo’s message is “Conform” with quotation marks, or a wink 😉 Tokyo wants you to follow the rules—or at least appear to follow them—but it tacitly makes room for digressions.
I went to Bangkok twice during my six-month Asia trip, and had two totally different experiences. This is part one: the week of being a tacky backpacker (July 2019).
Karen wrote some hilarious update emails to her family during our trip. I wanted to gather them all in one place for future reference, so here they are for your enjoyment.
Vancouver is like a combination of Rio de Janeiro and Montreal. (I think Rio is the most beautiful city in the world, and Montreal is the best city in the world.) Vancouver reminds me of both these places, but with some other less great aspects thrown in.
Last week, I drove across Canada with my friend Karen. (Well, she drove, and I sat there being useless, since her car is manual and I can only drive automatic.)
Hanoi is one of my new favorite places. Everyone told me it would be awesome, and they were right.
